Gehlen Catholic football defeats Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn for second-straight victory

After starting the year 0-2, the Gehlen Catholic football team won their second-straight game on Friday night with a 27-15 road win at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.

Gehlen was able to continue the trend of running the football effectively rushing for nearly 200 yards against the Hawks. Head coach Jeremy Schindler says adding some new twists to the running game helped its effectiveness.

The Jays were able to punctuate their strong offensive game by being really annoying on defense. Gehlen was living in the Hawk backfield with outstanding pressure. Facing off with a freshman quarterback, Coach Schindler says his team had to generate pressure to be successful.

The momentum thoroughly leaned Gehlen’s way after Wyatt Konz scooped up a blocked field goal and caught the Hawks napping. He ran the loose ball back 98 yards for a touchdown to put the Jays up two scores and set them in motion. Coach Schindler says those big plays are massive toward beating a good team.

With a 2-1 district record in tow, the Jays will step out of district play one last time to face off with a top-ten team in Class A this week. It’s a rematch of last year’s second-round postseason matchup as Gehlen faces off with Woodbury Central. Coach Schindler says the guys can not leave drives empty against a good team.

Kickoff between the Jays and Wildcats is set for 7:00 PM on Friday night in Moville. KLEM Radio will broadcast the game and live video stream on the KLEM Radio YouTube channel. Coverage begins at 6:15 PM.
