No. 1 MMCRU football retains unblemished record with win at Gehlen Catholic

The top-ranked MMCRU football team continued their unbeaten reign over Class A on Friday night with a 28-7 win at Gehlen Catholic.

Things were rough early on for the Royals who led at the halftime break by a score of 13-7 after turning the ball over twice. MMCRU head coach Kyle Oswald says his team had no one but themselves to blame for the early struggles.

During that first half, the Jays were able to run the football very effectively and do that all the way down toward their only score. After the halftime break, things tightened up for the Royals defensively. Coach Oswald says the guys made better tackles to slow down that aspect of Gehlen’s offense.

MMCRU got some big plays offensively from Gage Johnson who scored an 80-yard reception for the first score of the game then followed that with a 27-yard score on a long third down early in the second half. Coach Oswald says he is an athlete that was built to make plays like those.

The Royals sit at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the district sitting tied for the top spot in the district. They are tied with West Sioux, and the Falcons and Royals square off this week in Marcus. The district championship will be on the line, and Coach Oswald says his team will have to go through a perennially tough team to come out on top.

Kickoff between the No. 1 Royals and the No. 4 Falcons is set for 7:00 PM on Friday night in Marcus.
