The Gehlen Catholic volleyball team recorded a big road conference win on Tuesday with a 3-1 victory at Akron-Westfield.
The Jays had been struggling after losing a five-set match last week and dropping two out of three across town at the Le Mars Invite. Head coach Jesse Bohnenkamp says the girls wanted to show more competitiveness in Akron, and she says they accomplished that.
Gehlen was able to jump out early and take care of business in the first two sets thanks to their serving game. The Jays had 14 service aces for the match which helped them string together some long scoring runs. Coach Bohnenkamp says the serves they put forth were very aggressive.
Things were not looking so great early in the second set, however. The Jays lost their starting setter Addi Castle to an injury on the first point of the set and turned to Kennedy Konz, a freshman, to take over the position. Coach Bohnenkamp says she did a great job in facilitating things offensively.
Gehlen will have a tall task in their next match taking on third-ranked Hinton at home. Coach Bohnenkamp says her team needs to put their best foot forward regardless of the opponent.
First serve is set for 7:00 PM on Thursday night. KLEM will broadcast the match live with coverage beginning at 6:45 PM.
