BREAKING: Hawarden man suffers serious leg injury from grain trailer accident

A Hawarden man was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital after suffering a serious leg injury from a grain trailer this morning.

The incident occured at Premium Feed and Grain in Brunsville. 21-year-old Dylan Ver Hoeven of Hawarden was working next to the trailer, which was attached to a Freightliner semi-truck driven by 26-year-old Dillan Baartman of Le Mars. As the trailer was pulling away from the mill, a piece of Ver Hoeven’s clothes got caught in the trailer, and he was dragged several feet. Ver Hoeven was initally transported to Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, before being airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Ver Hoeven’s condition has not been made public as of Friday afternoon. KLEM will continue to update this story when more information becomes available. The full press release from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office:

On October 10, 2025, at 9:07 AM, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls regarding a male subject who had been involved in an accident located at Premium Feed and Grain Inc., 205 Elm StBrunsville, Iowa. Upon arrival a male subject, who was identified as Dylan Ver Hoeven, age 21, of Hawarden, Iowa was found with a serious leg injury. After an investigation into the accident, it was determined that Dillan Baartman, age 26, of Le Mars, Iowa had been driving a 2015 Freightliner Conventional semi pulling a 2010 Walinga bulk grain trailerBaartman was pulling away from the mill after he finished loading the bulk grain feed trailer while Ver Hoeven was working beside the trailer. As the Walinga trailer went past Ver Hoeven, a piece of Ver Hoeven’s clothing got caught on the trailer and he was dragged several feet. Ver Hoeven was transported to Floyd Valley Hospital by Le Mars Fire-Rescue where he was then flown to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls with serious injuries. The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Le Mars Fire-Rescue.”
