Third-ranked Hinton secures share of conference championship with sweep of Gehlen Catholic

The third-ranked Hinton volleyball team secured a share of their third-straight War Eagle Conference championship with a straight-set sweep of Gehlen Catholic on Thursday night.

After cruising through some other teams this season, Hinton knew they had to put their best foot forward against Gehlen. Hinton co-head coach Robin Mohr says the girls played a strong game and took things up a notch in the victory.

This was one of the tougher matches the Jays have played this season, and it showed early. Facing a team like Hinton, things have to be nearly perfect right from the start. Gehlen Catholic head coach Jesse Bohnenkamp says it took a little while for the girls to get adjusted to the pace of play.

Things would get going for the Jays in the second set when they were able to rattle off seven points in a row during one stretch. Coach Bohnenkamp says it was great to see things clicking in all facets during the match.

In the end, the Blackhawk defense proved to be too much to overcome. They tallied nine points on blocks in the win. Coach Mohr says their height has given teams some issues this season, and it’s a great weapon to have.

The Jays dropped to 8-17 overall and 4-5 in the War Eagle Conference with the loss. They have two more matches in conference play before starting postseason play on Monday, October 20 against Akron-Westfield. Coach Bohnenkamp wants to continue to see competitive play down the stretch.

Meanwhile, Hinton is 16-1 overall and 9-0 in the conference with the win. They have a tough test this weekend in Hull at a tournament hosted by Western Christian. Coach Mohr says these last few regular season opportunities will be great tests for the team.

Hinton will open the postseason on Wednesday, October 22 against the winner of Sibley-Ocheyedan and West Sioux.
