Meet the Candidates: Brian Bruns (City Council Ward 1, incumbent)
Election day is only weeks away, and citizens in Le Mars will vote for mayor and seats on the city council. Starting this week, KLEM will release interviews will candidates from each contested race in Le Mars, beginning with current Ward 1 City Councilman Brian Bruns.
Bruns moved to Le Mars in 2011, and has worked for Kemps for over 20 years. He was first elected to City Council in 2021, and says he wishes to continue representing the needs of taxpayers on the council.
On Vision 2045, Bruns says he’s in favor in some parts of the Community Development Plan, but doesn’t support others.
On the firehouse bond issue, he says he supports residents being able to directly vote on the issue.
Bruns will run for his seat in Ward 1 against Jaqueline Perez. KLEM will release an interview with Perez tomorrow.

Le Mars business one of five finalists for The BIG Challenge
A Le Mars business is one of five finalists in The BIG Challenge, it was announced yesterday.
The Market at Shop Near the Corner, run by local entrepreneur Priscilla Kenowith, will be one of five finalists chosen for the in-person competition. Ideas were submitted by Northwest Iowa entrepreneurs for a new business or expanding a current business, with three of the five finalists chosen by online voting, and the other two finalists chosen by a selection committee.
All finalists will have 6 minutes to pitch their idea to a panel of judges during the final pitch competition, which will take place at the Wells Visitor Center and Ice Cream Parlor in Le Mars on November 20th. The winner of the competition will receive $5,000, second place will receive $3,000, and third place will receive $2,000.
The BIG Challenge is sponsored and organized by Iowa’s West Coast Initiative, and Northwest Iowa Developers.

Jaywalk-a-thon raises $46,000 for Gehlen Catholic Schools
Gehlen Catholic’s annual Jaywalk-a-thon raised over $46,000 to support students and school-wide initiatives, the school has announced.
The walk was held this past Friday, and brought together students, staff, families, and supporters to walk laps around the school grounds. Students raised money and collected over 1,000 prayer intentions for the walk.
In a press release, Amy Jungers, development director for Gehlen Catholic, says that the fundraiser far surpassed expectations, and that the day was “about more than raising money. It brought our school family together in faith, joy, and purpose.”
All proceeds from the walk will go towards student programs and education at Gehlen Catholic.

Fall flushing underway in Le Mars
A reminder from the Water Department that fall flushing has begun in Le Mars, and will continue over the next couple of weeks.
The department began flushing the north side of Le Mars yesterday, and will start flushing the south side of town next Monday, October 20th. Residents should refrain from washing any clothes or running any more water than needed during the hours of 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.. The department says they expect flushing on the south side of Le Mars to take two weeks.
