Meet the Candidate: Jaqueline Perez (City Council, Ward 1)

Election day is just weeks away, and KLEM is continuing our profiles of candidates with Jaqueline Perez, who’s running for City Council in Ward 1.

Perez was born and raised in Le Mars, and moved back to town 15 years ago after living in Boston for several years. She has four young children, and has been the CEO of the Le Mars Family YMCA since 2023. Perez says that she’s contemplated running for City Council for over a year.

On Vision 2045, Perez says that she encourages citizens to read the plan and to attend Council meetings.

On the firehouse bond issue, Perez says she’s currently undecided, but acknowledges the need for improved conditions. If elected, Perez says she’ll bring a different perspective to the Council.

Perez will run against incumbent councilman Brian Bruns. Bruns’ profile is currently available on KLEM’s website here.

Plymouth County Sheriff asks for funds for new body scanner

During the Plymouth County Board of Supervisors meeting yesterday morning, Sheriff Jeff TeBrink requested county opioid funds for a new body scanner at the Plymouth County Jail.

The TEK84 Intercept Body Scanner would help law enforcement detect contraband on a person via x-ray, if a person was suspected of smuggling illegal substances or weapons in a body cavity. Plymouth County is one of the few counties in Northwest Iowa that currently doesn’t have a body scanner, according to Sheriff TeBrink. If a person is suspected of smuggling something in a body cavity by law enforcement, they would need to be transported to either Woodbury or Sioux counties. The total cost of the machine, including shipping and a one-year warranty, would come out to $141,500.

The Sheriff’s Office also provided quarterly reports during the meeting. The Board of Supervisors also approved a minor subdivision in Plymouth Township and approved a change to Courthouse hours over Christmas during yesterday’s meeting.

Four people were rescued from the Big Sioux River by first responders on Sunday.

Sioux County Conservation received a call at 6 p.m. Sunday that four individuals in two canoes were unable to paddle upstream to a boat ramp, where the rest of their party was located. Thanks to the use of a drone, the group was located on the river and rescued by Sioux County Emergency Management and the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office. No injuries were reported, but one person was transported to a Hawarden hospital due to low blood sugar.
