The MMCRU football team clinched their first district title as MMCRU with a 14-7 win over fourth-ranked West Sioux on Friday night.
It’s the first district title for either of the school districts since MMC’s great 2015 season where they won the state title, and things started right away on Friday night for the Royals. MMCRU’s first play from scrimmage went 75 yards for a touchdown from Brayson Mulder. MMCRU head coach Kyle Oswald says he wanted his team to set the tone early, and they did just that.
Right away, West Sioux answered on the very next drive to tie the game at seven. After that, West Sioux failed to score again. Coach Oswald says his coaching staff did a great job of regrouping the guys after that scoring drive.
That regroup proved beneficial with MMCRU shining on defense. They forced six turnovers with five of them on interceptions. Coach Oswald says he has some great athletes that made some phenomenal plays.
The Royals now sit at 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the district. They have already locked up the top auto-qualifier out of the district and will go for the outright district title on Friday at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn. Coach Oswald says this was a great accomplishment, but his team has to find a way to keep getting better so this is not where his team peaks out at.
Kickoff between the Royals and the Hawks is at 7:00 PM on Friday night in Hartley. MMCRU will then find out their playoff matchup in the first round on Saturday morning.
