Meet the Candidates: Mark Sturgeon (City Council, Ward 3, incumbent)

Election day is just weeks away, and KLEM is continuing our profiles of candidates this week with councilman Mark Sturgeon, who’s running for another term representing Ward 3 on the City Council.

Originally from Leeds, Iowa, Sturgeon has resided in Le Mars for over four decades, and has served as a certified court reporter for a similar amount of time. Sturgeon says he’s always wanted to involve himself in politics early on.

On Vision 2045, Sturgeon says he likes having a plan in place for Le Mars’ future.

On the firehouse bond issue, Sturgeon says he supports the issue, highlighting the space constraints of the current facilities.

Sturgeon says he hopes to earn another opportunity to represent the citizens of Le Mars.

Sturgeon will run for his seat in Ward 3 against Dan Dembinski. Dembinski’s interview will air tomorrow on KLEM.

Candle causes house fire in Hinton, no injuries reported

Firefighters were sent to a home in rural Hinton yesterday, after a fire was started by a candle in the basement of the residence.

At approximately 11:34 a.m., Hinton Fire Rescue was dispatched to a home on 310th Street in Hinton, where first responders noticed heavy smoke coming from the back of the residence. After determining the fire originated from the basement, crews quickly brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading further throughout the house.

An investigation determined the cause of the fire to be a candle in the basement, and that the fire was accidental. All occupants and pets in the house were able to evacuate before crews arrived. The Le Mars Fire Rescue, Merrill Fire Department, Hinton Police Department, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, and the Rural Electric Cooperative assisted with the fire.
