Piece of Cake, Helping Hands team up to help those in need
Two local businesses are teaming up to help those struggling with food insecurity in the area with a food drive.
Michelle Bomgaars, the owner of Piece of Cake downtown, told KLEM the idea for the drive came from recent events, such as the lapse in federal funding for SNAP benefits and the government shutdown.
She reached out to Jim Plueger, who owns Helping Hands Donation and Thrift Store, to find a way to help those in need.
From that conversation, the plan for a food drive took shape.
Starting now, anyone can stop at Piece of Cake and donate food, gift cards, household goods, and gently used winter coats and hats. Bomgaars says they’re primarily looking for non-perishable goods and foods that have a long shelf life, and Plueger asks those donating for items to “make a meal”.
All items will go to Helping Hands, and will be available for those in need. Bomgaars says customers can drop items off during Piece of Cake’s business hours.
Bomgaars says donations will be accepted for the foreseeable future.

Fareway announces month-long initiative to combat food insecurity
Fareway has announced a new initiative during the month of November aimed at combating food insecurity in local communities.
Customers can participate in three ways: by purchasing pre-bagged donations, by donating individual items, or by making a monetary donation. Pre-bagged donations are prepared by stores, and consist of food items that are distributed directly to local food banks and pantries. Every location will accept monetary donations, with every dollar going towards purchasing food products for those at need. Fareway will match all monetary donations throughout November.
In a press release, Reynolds Cramer, CEO of Fareway Stores, says Fareway is “deeply grateful to our customers who join us in supporting those who need it most.”
All Fareway locations will accept donations throughout November.
