Gehlen Catholic girls basketball wins first game of the season over Akron-Westfield

The Gehlen Catholic girls basketball team won their first game of the year defeating Akron-Westfield on Friday night by the score of 58-43.

The game was dictated by the tempo of two teams that wanted to put pressure on the other making things speed up all game. Gehlen Catholic head coach Brandon Schaecher says that works for his team’s play style.

For the Westerners, they also like playing up tempo and speeding up their opponents. Head coach Corey DeRocher says it unfortunately sped up his team too much to be able to be under control with the ball.

Gehlen Catholic got a lot of their scoring from Ella Ruhland who had 17 points in the win. Coach Schaecher says she has been encouraged all season to look to score more, and she did that in the victory.

Akron-Westfield dropped to 0-2 with the loss. The program remains young as a roster and young in the coaching staff with a first-year head coach at the helm. Coach DeRocher says that means he needs to see some steady progress each and every day.

The Jays will take a 1-3 record into a busy week that starts with top-ranked Hinton on Tuesday night. Coach Schaecher says the girls have made strides offensively, and he hopes that continues into the upcoming week.

Akron-Westfield returns to action Monday vs Kingsley-Pierson.
