Hinton girls basketball cruises past Gehlen Catholic in bounce-back win

The top-ranked Hinton girls basketball team proved their ranking with a 63-13 win at Gehlen Catholic on Tuesday night.

Prior to the win, the Blackhawks had lost their first regular season game in over a full season falling to West Lyon in the game prior. Hinton head coach Matt Leary says the interior game was not up to par in that game, and the emphasis against Gehlen was to shore that up.

The score certainly suggests that the game was a struggle for the Jays who were behind in most aspects of the game all night. However, in the second quarter, the Jays put together a nice start to the frame on both sides of the ball. Headd coach Brandon Schaecher says he needed to see that more consistently throughout the game.

Hinton used their size advantage to win the rebounding battle handily and create second chance opportunities. Coach Leary says a goal for his team every night is to win the rebounding battle.

The Jays fall to 1-4 with the loss to Hinton. Games against tough teams continue on the schedule all season for the Jays. Coach Schaecher says he wants his team in these challenging games to play free in future opportunities.

The Blackhawks improve to 3-1 on the season and are continuing their hopes of repeating as state champs this year. Coach Leary says getting that done will require the little things to continue to be worked on all season.

Gehlen Catholic is in action against Unity Christian at home on Thursday night. Hinton returns to the court on Friday with a road matchup at MMCRU.
