No. 3 MMCRU boys basketball remains undefeated with win at Gehlen Catholic

The third-ranked MMCRU boys basketball team remained undefeated hanging on for a 54-45 win over Gehlen Catholic on the road.

The game ultimately came down to the first quarter where MMCRU blitzed the Jays to a 24-5 advantage heading into the second quarter. MMCRU head coach Cam Kuchel says his team did it on the back of a great press that turned into offense in a hurry.

That deficit was too much for the Jays to overcome. Head coach Eric Kellen says they played too much into the hands of the Royal press.

While the game was decided after the first quarter, it certainly turned into an entertaining finish. The Jays brought the game as close as six points but could never get over the hump to bring it within striking distance. Coach Kuchel says his guys were a bit tired and could not quite keep up the pace they played with in the first half.

Gehlen Catholic’s busy and tough month of December ends with a record of 6-4. They return to action on Tuesday, January 6 against West Sioux at home. Coach Kellen says his guys need to have better understanding on what to do in some high stakes pressure situations.

After winning a state football championship and going right into basketball season, the Royals have not had much time to sit and rest their bodies. Coach Kuchel says that will be the primary purpose of the holiday time off.

MMCRU improves to 7-0 behind the scoring effort of 17 points from Kamden Bork. Gehlen Catholic was led offensively by Mason Small’s 15 points.
