The Akron-Westfield boys wrestling team competed well with a 10th-place finish at the Le Mars Invitational on Saturday.
The Westerners finished with many place-winners and two wrestlers in the finals to headline the day. Head coach John Sievert says he was proud of many of his wrestlers for exceeding expectations against good competition.
Conner Morrow headlined the day with a championship at 113 pounds winning all four of his matches convincingly. Coach Sievert says Morrow is wrestling well on top allowing him to take control of matches.
The other Westerner to finish in the finals was Brodie Hoffman who was the runner-up at 157 pounds. Coach Sievert says his path to the finals kept getting tougher, and Hoffman kept responding to the tougher challenges.
Outside of four place-winners, the Westerners could not get much out of some of their other wrestlers. Coach Sievert says to have a good showing further down the road at districts, he needs all of his wrestlers to compete with confidence.
The Westerners are back in action in Sloan on Tuesday for a tough dual quad at Westwood. Akron-Westfield’s district tournament is set for Saturday, February 14 at West Lyon.
