Gehlen Catholic girls basketball snaps skid with win over Akron-Westfield

The Gehlen Catholic girls basketball team snapped a five-game losing skid with a 42-32 home victory over Akron-Westfield on Tuesday night.

In spite of losing five-straight, the Jays have been playing some good basketball. They just have not seen the results on the scoreboard, and head coach Brandon Schaecher says it was good to change that with a win.

Akron-Westfield was leading the game at the halftime break by a score of 18-17. They played some strong defense that kept the Gehlen offense from reaching its full potential early on. Head coach Corey DeRocher says they just did not have the offensive execution to pair with it.

In the second half, Gehlen got both sides of the ball working with an 18-4 advantage in the third quarter. That gave them the lead for good the rest of the way. Coach Schaecher says turning up the defensive pressure led to things flipping their way.

The loss for Akron-Westfield marks their eighth in a row and sends their record to 2-14 overall and 2-6 in the War Eagle Conference. Coach DeRocher says taking the positives from this loss and building on them will be important toward picking up some momentum late in the season.

The Jays improve to 5-12 overall and 3-4 in the War Eagle Conference. The Jays will take on Remsen St. Mary’s on the road on Friday night in an emotional game for both sides. Coach Schaecher says it will be crucial to put those emotions away at the start of the game.

Bella Scheitler led the Jays with seven points while Kaberlee Fairbanks paced the Westerners with eight points in the loss.
