Alleged Lyon County Courthouse vandal enters not guilty plea

One of the suspects accused of burglarizing the Lyon County Courthouse back in December has pleaded not guilty to six charges.

39-year-old Brandon High Pipe of Rapid City, SD entered a not guilty plea to charges of 1st degree criminal mischief, 3rd degree burglary, reckless use of fire, explosives, or destructive devices, willful disturbance, and two counts of conspiracy to commit nonforcible felony. Pipe has also waived his right to a speedy trial, according to court documents.

Authorities say that Pipe and 18-year-old Luciano Eliseo Sanchez of Denver, CO, broke into the courthouse early on December 17th, and moved throughout the building, causing extensive damage. Investigators found broken glass, knocked down Christmas trees, items thrown around, and writing on the walls of the courthouse. Damage to the building has been estimated at $10,000.

Sanchez is facing the same charges as Pipe, but with additional charges of 5th degree theft and assault on persons in certain occupations with bodily fluids cast. Sanchez picked up the last charge during an incident earlier this month, where he threw a cup of urine at a corrections officer.

State senator Catelin Drey reveals cancer diagnosis

State senator Catelin Drey of Sioux City has announced she has been diagnosed with stage one uterine cancer, undergoing a hysterectomy on Tuesday. Drey announced her recent diagnosis Monday in remarks delivered on the floor of the Iowa Senate.

Drey says the story is not unique to her and she is the newest person admitted to Iowa’s least desirable club. She says there is some good news though.

Drey made reference to her predecessor, Rocky de Witt, who’s term she won a special election to finish after he died of cancer last year.

Drey says she will be transparent about her recovery and all that comes with it.

Drey says this interruption may temporarily slow her, but she is not going anywhere, and will be back to work as soon as she is able, ready to serve the people of Senate District 1.
