Gehlen Catholic boys basketball shoots and defends their way to victory at Remsen St. Mary’s

The Gehlen Catholic boys basketball team finished off a perfect week with a 53-31 win at Remsen St. Mary’s on Friday night.

Defensively, the Jays came out on a mission to shut down the Hawks whatever way possible. Gehlen held Remsen St. Mary’s to just 13 points in the first half and continued that intensity the rest of the way. Gehlen Catholic head coach Eric Kellen says his guys responded to the challenge and played well defensively.

Once things were locked up on defense, the Jays could get to work offensively. They did that from the outside going 7-13 from long range for the game. Remsen St. Mary’s co-head coach Justin Ruden says they are a tough team to matchup with, and they showed why.

Coach Kellen says those opportunities came from the threats posed inside by some great post players.

The loss keeps the Hawks on a trend of struggling with a new team this season. Coach Ruden hopes the guys have learned to be the instigators heading into the late portion of the season.

The Jays are in a spot to make a deep postseason run with some well-timed late-season momentum. Coach Kellen says that run will not be possible if the Jays do not clean up their late game situations.

Gehlen improved to 12-6 overall and 6-2 in the War Eagle Conference with the win while Remsen St. Mary’s fell to 4-12 overall and 2-6 in the conference with the loss.
