The Gehlen Catholic girls basketball team took care of business Friday night with a 50-39 victory at Remsen St. Mary’s.
The Jays wasted no time jumping out to an early double-digit lead that saw their lead increase to as much as 20 points in the first half. Head coach Brandon Schaecher says some of the fundamental work they have put in lately went to work right away.
Later in the game, Remsen St. Mary’s started to get back into things. The Hawks closed the game to a six-point margin midway through the fourth quarter but ultimately could not pull ahead. Head coach Joseph Loutsch says his team played with some aggressiveness late in the game.
The Jays were able to finish with three of their players scoring in double figures. Ayla Schmidt, Ella Ruhland, and Halle Walgenbach all contributed at least 10 points on the offensive side of the ball. Coach Schaecher says it was great to see that consistency on offense.
Remsen St. Mary’s girls remain winless in the War Eagle Conference following the loss, but they have not backed down this season. The Hawks will continue their run to the postseason with a young and inexperienced group that is ready for more. Coach Loutsch says he wants to see growth continue throughout the stretch run.
Gehlen Catholic finishes off a week with a pair of wins and also turns their attention to the final week of the season. Coach Schaecher says he wants his team to attack every game the rest of the way with an intensity that can carry them a full 32 minutes.
Gehlen Catholic’s record improved to 6-12 with the win while Remsen St. Mary’s fell to 5-8 on the season with the loss.
