Gehlen Catholic girls basketball season ends with road loss to South O’Brien

The Gehlen Catholic girls basketball season ended on Tuesday night in the regional quarterfinal by a score of 49-45 at South O’Brien.

The Jays and Wolverines played a low-scoring first half with the defenses getting into a groove early. Gehlen Catholic head coach Brandon Schaecher says he was happy that his team could get settled in on that side of the floor.

Things changed dramatically for the Jays in the third quarter who were outscored 21-6 in the period and fell behind by 17 points. Coach Schaecher says the girls were not in the right headspace in that portion of the game.

The Jays were able to work out of it and outscore the Wolverines 20-7 in the fourth quarter bringing the margin as close as four points. Coach Schaecher says his team finally got in their groove in the fourth quarter to cut a 17-point deficit down to four points.

The season ends for Gehlen Catholic with a record of 9-14. Gehlen is in an enviable position with their returning cast for next year. Coach Schaecher says with one senior graduating, he hopes this fuels the team to get better in the offseason.

South O’Brien advances to play George-Little Rock in George on Friday in the regional semifinal round.
