Le Mars Public Library to celebrate 150 years of operation
The Le Mars Public Library will turn 150 years old on Wednesday, and to celebrate, the library will host a Chamber Coffee event that will kick off 150 days of celebrating the library’s impact on Le Mars. During the Chamber Coffee on Wednesday, Mayor Rob Bixenman will read a proclamation from the city, and the winning library card designs from a design contest held last fall will be unveiled.
Other events planned during the celebration will include a talk from Dr. Shana Stuart on April 23rd during National Library Week, Patron Appreciation Month during May, a bookmark contest during June, and All Le Mars Read during July. The celebrations will conclude on August 6th with the 150th Celebration Bash, to be held at the library from 5pm-7pm. Additional events will be revealed over the course of the celebration.
Library service in Le Mars started in 1876 as a paid membership service, with the city taking over operations in 1885. The library has been in its current building since 1976, having moved from the Carnegie Library building that opened in 1904.

Testing smoke alarms during Daylight Savings Time
Daylight Savings occurred yesterday, and besides turning your clocks forward an hour, Lt. John Nelsen of Sioux City Fire Rescue says it’s a traditional time to test your smoke alarms to make sure the devices are working.
Just push the test button to hear the beep. Nelsen says the newer smoke alarms often don’t give you access to change a battery.
Nelsen says some smoke alarms also have a carbon monoxide detector, but if yours doesn’t, be sure to check that device in your home and make sure it’s placed properly.
Lt. Nelsen says you should have a working alarm on each floor of your home. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half, as you only have about two minutes to safely escape in most instances.
