The Akron-Westfield baseball team avenged one loss in their runner-up finish in the 2026 Spalding Catholic Tournament on Saturday. They defeated Remsen St. Mary’s 7-2 in the semifinal while losing to Kingsley-Pierson 12-2 in six innings in the championship.
The Westerners had lost to Remsen St. Mary’s on the first of June via a 10-0 five-inning run rule. Over the last three weeks, Akron-Westfield has proven to have improved enough to flip that result. Head coach Gordon Johnson says the goal is always to keep getting better.
In the championship matchup with Kingsley-Pierson, Akron-Westfield scored first with a two-run first inning, and both runs came off the bat of Matthew Swancutt. Coach Johnson says he was happy to see the early production from his team.
After that, Kingsley-Pierson took over. The Panthers scored the next 12 runs including seven in the bottom of the first to stun the Westerners. Coach Johnson says having a young team means they are still learning even while getting better, and nights like this are going to happen.
The results from Saturday move Akron-Westfield’s record to 10-9 overall. The Westerners are entering the final couple of weeks of the season and start with their longest road trip of the year to Harris-Lake Park. Coach Johnson says it will be a good bounce back for his guys who historically have not always played well there.
The Westerners are also in action on Wednesday at Hinton and on Thursday at home against Gehlen Catholic.
