The Gehlen Catholic baseball team had to squeak out a tight 2-1 victory over West Sioux in Le Mars on Wednesday night.
After losing three games in a row over the weekend, and two of them by one run, the Jays were looking forward to coming out on top in a close game. Head coach TJ Britton says this was a good way to show the guys what they can do in close scenarios.
The Jays struggled to put runs on the board consistently throughout the game and can thank two big West Sioux errors that helped lead to the runs. While Gehlen Catholic was able to get on with walks, Coach Britton would have liked to see some better at bats with runners on throughout the game.
The pitching staff came through with another strong game as Koby Paulson allowed just one run through the first five innings and Wyatt Konz and Brayden Horkey came in to finish the final two innings. Coach Britton says he was very pleased with the effort from his pitchers.
The Jays have a crucial conference matchup right after this one with a road game at Akron-Westfield on Thursday night. Coach Britton knows these games are big for conference standing placement, and he says it will be another good challenge for his team.
First pitch between the Jays and Westerners is at 7:30 PM on Thursday at Sargent Field in Akron.
