The Le Mars Community softball team saw their season end on Thursday night with a 15-0 loss in four innings to the Spencer Tigers in the opening round of the region tournament.
The Bulldogs were firmly behind the eight ball from the moment the game began as Spencer scored nine runs in the bottom of the first and six in the bottom of the second. Le Mars head coach Brooke Berkenpas says Spencer’s offense is really solid and makes it a challenge to pitch against.
While the Bulldogs did not score, Le Mars did show some good things offensively making solid contact. The Bulldogs had three players reach base in the game including two that reached twice while others more could have made it on had their contact found some grass. Coach Berkenpas says she liked the contact the girls were making.
Le Mars graduates four seniors off this year’s team including a couple that only spent one year in the varsity ranks while others enjoyed a few seasons at the varsity level. Coach Berkenpas says all four of them were valuable to the program.
The Bulldogs end the year with a record of 10-27 and will look to use this as a stepping stone toward better days in the next few years. Coach Berkenpas says she hopes the young kids will use this as something they can build off of next year.
Spencer advances to take on Bishop Heelan on Saturday in Sioux City in the semifinal round of the region bracket.
