Akron-Westfield football uses returning talent to get ready for challenging schedule

The Akron-Westfield football team went 2-6 in 2025 competing in a schedule that featured a quarterfinalist, a semifinalist, and the Class A state champion.

The Westerners were also very youthful last year making it tough to hang with the tough teams in the area. Now, those youthful athletes are a year more experienced at the varsity level. Head coach John Sievert says he is seeing that experience show out in preseason practices.

Coach Sievert says having a lot of key contributors returning from last year is helping preparation move along quickly in practice.

On the offensive side, the Westerners return a lot of their major skill guys that produced most of the offense last year. However, Akron-Westfield also returns three starters on the offensive line that helped pave the way for all those skill guys. Coach Sievert says the line has done a great job of bringing some younger pieces up to their level in the offseason.

Defensively, Akron-Westfield struggled at times in 2025. With all the potent offenses they faced, it was tough to keep opponents down. Coach Sievert says having everybody back, especially in the secondary, will help improve the defensive unit as a whole.

The Westerners open up right out of the gate with the defending state champions from MMCRU in Akron on Friday night. Coach Sievert says beating the Royals will be tough, but he says taking care of things on his team’s end will help out their cause.

Kickoff between Akron-Westfield and MMCRU is at 7:00 PM in Akron on Friday night.
