The Le Mars Community volleyball team began their season with a thrilling five-set win over Sioux City West on Tuesday night in Le Mars.
With this being the season-opener, the energy was high on both sides of the net. Le Mars head coach Jess Wolles says having a young team made the energy on their side of the net a bit more of a nervous energy.
The Bulldogs cruised to wins in the first two sets but fell in the third and fourth with tighter final scores. Coach Wolles says West made some great adjustments that allowed them to come back in the match.
Le Mars trotted out a number of freshmen that were getting their first varsity reps in competition. One of those was setter Jaimie Beltran who finished the night with 43 assists. Coach Wolles says she helped facilitate the offense well.
The Bulldogs return to action right away on Thursday with a tournament in Sheldon that will also feature the top-ranked Class 3A team with Cherokee in attendance. Coach Wolles says the Bulldogs have to do a better job of finishing matches going forward.
Le Mars improves to 1-0 on the season and opens their MRAC schedule with a 1-0 record as well.
