The Gehlen Catholic volleyball team opens year two under head coach Jessie Bohnenkamp tonight in Sheldon.
The Jays finished below .500 last season and are looking to put the pieces together to have a better season this year. Coach Bohnenkamp says changing up the practice structure a bit has helped prepare the girls early on.
Due to an injury to setter Addi Castle last year, the Jays had to play Kennedy Konz at that position as well. Now, both players are back and healthy, and the Jays have a decision to make at the setter position. Coach Bohnenkamp says making that decision could be a bit of a process.
The Jays also return some steady hands defensively with just about all of their key back row players returning. Coach Bohnenkamp says that gives everyone a sense of relief knowing they have some back-up when needed.
Gehlen is set to compete against some tough teams this year. They take on top-ranked Cherokee right away in Sheldon, they’ll play Bishop Heelan at CYO, they will play Central Lyon in a non-conference match, and they play Remsen St. Mary’s and Hinton in conference play. Coach Bohnenkamp says she likes to see her team tested.
The Sheldon Tournament begins this afternoon at 4:30.
