The Akron-Westfield volleyball team started Tuesday’s triangular rough getting swept by Gehlen Catholic, but they bounced back well to upset No. 14 Remsen St. Mary’s in four sets.
The Westerners had to regroup quickly after the loss to the Jays since the Hawks were waiting in the wings. Akron-Westfield head coach Nicolle DeRocher says her team utilized their out-of-system passes much better in the second match.
With a better grasp of their offensive execution, the Westerners were able to get plenty of their top hitters going. That included Molly Holmes and Kaylee Miller who each finished in double figures in the kill column. Coach DeRocher says Holmes and Miller make a big difference offensively.
Akron-Westfield also had some help from some big swings throughout the match. Namely, a 10-point run to finish the first set up 25-22 after being down 22-15. Coach DeRocher says capturing the momentum there was very important.
The Westerners look for their second War Eagle Conference win on Thursday with a home matchup against South O’Brien. Coach DeRocher says it was great for her team to see what it takes to win a meaningful volleyball match, and that should help them down the road.
The Westerners and the Wolverine square off starting at 7:00 in Akron on Thursday night.
