TROUBLESHOOTING AND KNOWN ISSUES

Video Export

• While you can import many different types of video files into Adobe Audition, Adobe Audition can only export video that was imported from an AVI (.avi) file. With other formats you can export only audio, which can then be recombined with the original video in video editing software such as Adobe Premiere® Pro.

•When you export video, you can choose different third party audio codecs by clicking on the Options button in the Video Export Save As dialog. Problems have been found when using some of these third party codecs. For example, the video may contain no audio or the file may not be created. Problems have been reported with the following third party codecs: Microsoft G723.1, Windows Media Audio V1, ACELP.net, WM Speech Encoder DMO, Nero Audio Encoder, and IAC2. To avoid problems of this nature, choose PCM as your audio codec.

Using Markers from Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 and Adobe After Effects® 6.5

• When you create an AVI file in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 or Adobe After Effects 6.5, information contained in sequence markers or layer markers, respectively, is exported to the AVI file. When you import the AVI file into Adobe Audition, the sequence or layer markers are imported as cues in the extracted audio file. You can edit the imported cues as you would cues created directly in Edit View.

In Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, markers have a duration of one or more frames. When the markers are imported into Adobe Audition, they appear as cue ranges corresponding to the length of the marker in frames. When you create markers in Adobe Premiere Pro or After Effects, the value you enter in the Chapter Name field will be displayed as the marker label in Adobe Audition and the Comment field will be displayed as the cue Description. You can view information about the cues in the Edit View Cue List window.

Note: Only markers created with Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 and After Effects 6.5 can be utilized by Adobe Audition 1.5. This will not work with content created with previous versions of these products.

CD Burning

• Some CD-RW drives cannot handle writing ISRC and UPC/EAN values. If your attempt to write fails, try to uncheck the Write CD-Text box in the Write CD dialog and uncheck the ISRC box in the Track Properties dialog for every track in the CD Project View.

• For some CD-RW drives, an incorrect Write Speed will be displayed in the CD Device Properties dialog and you will be unable to change the setting. In these cases, the CD will be burned at the maximum possible speed for the drive.

• The maximum number of Index Cues per track supported by Adobe Audition is 98.

Extract Audio from CD (CD Ripping)

SPTI vs ASPI: The default mode for CD audio extraction is SPTI. It is recommended that you do not use ASPI due to known problems with different versions of ASPI drivers. For more details, visit the Adobe Audition Support site: www.adobe.com/support/products/audition.html

External CD Drives and DVD/CD Drives: Due to driver incompatibilities that can cause severe operating system crashes, CD Ripping from external USB/Firewire CD drives and DVD/CD drives is disabled from within Adobe Audition. You can manually enable this functionality by double-clicking the file EnableIOCTLPNP.reg. This file is located in the folder where you installed Adobe Audition 1.5 (the default location is \Program Files\Adobe\Audition 1.5). To revert to the default state where this functionality is disabled, double-click the file DisableIOCTLPNP.reg which is located in the same directory.

Warning: Attempting to rip from some devices of this type may cause your entire Windows operating system to crash (aka "blue screen").

Silence using Buffer Size larger than 128 KB: Only silence will be extracted when the Buffer Size setting in the Extract Audio from CD dialog is greater than 128 KB when using SPTI mode for CD audio extraction. Use 128 KB or lower to work around this problem.

ReWire

Effects on multiple ReWire tracks: When you assign multiple tracks in Adobe Audtion to the same ReWire slave application, you cannot apply effects to these tracks. The FX button will be disabled on these tracks. If the track in Adobe Audition already has effects applied, and then you assign other tracks to the same source, these effects will be ignored. If you route multiple ReWire tracks from the same source to a bus and apply effects to the bus, the bus audio may become distorted.

Launching ReWire Applications: To launch an application in ReWire slave mode, you first need to launch Adobe Audition, enable ReWire and select the ReWire slave application. Then click on the Launch button to start the Rewire slave application. Some ReWire slave applications do not support being launched via ReWire and nothing will happen when you click the Launch button. For these applications, start the slave application through normal means after enabling ReWire in Adobe Audition, such as the Windows Start > Programs menu. Once the ReWire application is then launched, it will automatically be in Slave mode.

Tempo: Adobe Audition does not support multiple tempos within a single session. If your ReWire slave application uses a session that contains multiple tempos, Adobe Audition will not respond to the tempo changes.

Tempo and Time Signatures: Changes made to tempo and time signature within a ReWire slave application will not be reflected in Adobe Audition. However, changes made to the session tempo or time signature in Adobe Audition will be reflected in the ReWire slave application.

Sound Cards and Audio Interface

• To record multiple tracks simultaneously in Adobe Audition 1.5, the sound card or audio interface you are using must have MME audio drivers available. Without these drivers, Adobe Audition cannot interact with the device as intended, and can at most record in just a single stereo track.

Adobe Audtion does NOT support ASIO Drivers. Some sound cards that support ASIO also support MME and have a "Force MME" option in their settings interface. Use this option when available.

Maximum Recording Inputs

• Adobe Audition 1.5 supports up to 64 stereo inputs (128 mono inputs) for recording. This is an increase from the previous version of 16 stereo inputs in Adobe Audition 1.0.

4GB File Size Limit

• Adobe Audition has a maximum file size limit of 4 Gigabytes. If you are recording in the Edit View, recording will automatically stop once you reach a file size of 4 GB. If you are recording in Multitrack View, recording to the tracks will continue beyond a file size of 4 GB. However, to save the track after recording is complete, you will need to split the track into multiple clips smaller than 4 GB and save each clip on the track to a separate file.

Center Channel Extractor

• The Center Channel Extractor can be applied to a track in the Multitrack View. However, this effect is very processor-intensive. If your computer is not powerful enough, you may not be able to run this effect successfully in real time.

Button Activation with the Spacebar

• The Tab key can be used to move focus to various buttons in the Organizer window or in the CD Project View. By default, you would then be able to use the Spacebar to activate the buttons. However, if you have the option "Force Spacebar to always trigger play" checked in the Settings dialog, the Spacebar will no longer activate the button that has focus. When this option is on, you must use Shift + Spacebar to activate the button.

Snap to Frames Behavior

• In multitrack view, it is possible to set your snapping behavior to frames by right-clicking on the timeline, and selecting Snap to Frames (Always). This allows the cursor to snap to a frame boundary, as long as the time format is measured in frames (such as Compact Disc and SMPTE). This command is especially handy for working on audio for CD. It is important to note that the frames in use here are audio frames, not video frames.

Saving When File is Open in Adobe Premiere Pro

• When attempting to save a change to an audio file in Adobe Audition that is also loaded in Adobe Premiere Pro, you may see an error that states: "File is probably in use by another application. Please close the other application and try saving again." In this case, the file is still being read by Adobe Premiere Pro in order to conform the audio. You will need to wait until the audio from the file is conformed in Adobe Premiere Pro before saving the changes to the file. A progress bar in the lower right corner of the Adobe Premiere Pro application window displays that status of the audio conform.

AIF Format

There is a known problem saving audio data into the AIF format if the audio has any samples that exceed 0 dBFS which is referred to as “clipping”.  To see if your audio is clipping, select the entire clip in the Edit View and choose Analyze > Statistics… If the value for Possibly Clipped Samples is not zero, you may need to save in a different format or eliminate clipping prior to saving in the AIF format.

VSTi and DXi

• VST and DirectX audio effects plug-ins are supported in Adobe Audition 1.5. VSTi and DXi plug-ins, also known as virtual instrument plug-ins, are not supported.

Scripts

• The format of script collection files has changed in Adobe Audition 1.5 from ASCII text to Unicode text. You can still open script collections and run scripts created with previous versions of Adobe Audition and Cool Edit Pro. However, you will not be able to add any newly recorded scripts to these files. To work around this problem:

  1. Open the Scripts dialog by selecting the Options > Scripts in Edit View.
  2. Click on the Open/New Collection button and select the old script collection file. When you open a script file from a previous version, you will see "(Read-Only)" displayed next to the collection name.
  3. Click the Edit Script File button
  4. In the editor, press Ctrl + A to select the contents of the file, and then Ctrl + C to copy them.
  5. Create a new script collection by clicking the Open/New Collection button and entering a new file name
  6. Click the Edit Script File button
  7. Press Ctrl + V to paste the contents you copied from the old script collection into the new script collection.

THIRD PARTY COMPATIBILITY

Microsoft DirectX

• To import video files into Adobe Audition, you will need to have DirectX 9.0 or later installed. DirectX may also be used to open some audio files.

• For some features of multi-channel encoding (more than 2-channel stereo), Adobe Audition 1.5 requires Microsoft DirectX 8.0 or later.

The latest version of DirectX can be found on the Microsoft web site, at www.microsoft.com/windows/directx. The installer for DirectX 9.0b is also included on the Adobe Audition CD in the “DirectX” folder. To install, run dxsetup.exe.
