(Le Mars) Two students from Gehlen Catholic School have had their work published in a local magazine. David Puhl, son of Nick and Deb Puhl, and Megan Kellen, daughter of Tom and Laurie Kellen are featured in ‘Harvest’ magazine, a production of the Northwest Area Education agency. Megan Kellen’s selection, “My First Pets” is about a student who wanted a pet, but instead got hot dogs. Nick Puhl’s “The Detective Story” tells the tale of Detective Moran who investigates a burglary at a New York Park Avenue apartment. ‘Harvest’ is published annually by the NWAEA Education Services Division, and features art work and writing talent of students throughout Northwest Iowa.
(Sioux City) Students from a Sioux City university have been named one of the top 40 teams nationally in overall competition during the Students in Free Enterprise National Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Briar Cliff University’s students also placed second in their division in the Success Skills category for their projects in Tanzania. The students worked with Siouxland Tanzania Educational and Medical Ministries to provide grants to women entrepreneurs, laptops and college scholarships to high school seniors and bilingual children’s books in English and Swahili to needy children. In the past year, B-C-U SIFE have completed over 3,800 hours of team involvement, including a curbside recycling program for Dakota Dunes, South Dakota and surrounding areas.
(Spencer) Future marketing entrepreneurs won top spots in the Iowa Lakes Coridor Regional Business Plan Competition at the Clay County Regional Events center earlier this month. Tyler Enerson from Estherville Lincoln Central won first place with his marketing presentation for Enerson Power Sports. Shelby Guse from E-L-C won second place for Tabiki’s Bar and Grill presentation. Silvia Salinas from Storm Lake High School took third place with Kissable Tips Salon. The top three places were awarded cash prizes. Scott Anderson from Buena Vista University praised all partcipants, saying “The presentations were equivalent of the college level plans in marketing classes.
DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) Clad in caps and gowns, more than four dozen graduates of Central Alternative High School’s class of 2010 were the school’s last. Yesterday’s commencement ceremonies in Dubuque marked one of the final moments for the high school, which will shut its doors for good at the end of the school year. That’s because budget cuts forced the Dubuque Community School Board to vote earlier this spring to close Central’s building. Newly minted graduate Lisa Croft says she is “really blessed” to have attended the school. She’s the first in her family to receive a high school diploma.
The school plans to hold a closing ceremony in early June.
WASHINGTON (AP) Senator Tom Harkin is asking Iowans to join him in honoring fallen members of the U.S. military. Harkin’s comments came Saturday in a statement released by his Washington office. In it, the Iowa democrat says everyone should “remember and thank the men and women of the armed forces who served and sacrificed on the field of battle.” Harkin says Iowans are “united” in their respect for those who lost their lives in war. And that residents of the state also “respect the profound loss” that families of the fallen had to endure.
MIDDLETOWN, Iowa (AP) The Iowa National Guard will hold a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of work on a $16 million readiness center and $6.2 million maintenance shop in southeast Iowa. The event will be held Tuesday afternoon in Middletown, just west of Burlington. It will celebrate construction of a center that will become headquarters to the 831st Engineer Company, now stationed in Burlington, and the Army Reserve’s 389th Engineer Company, now stationed in Middletown. Federal funds are paying for the projects, and completion is expected in fall 2011. Once completed, existing headquarters for the two engineer companies will be closed.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) Speeding motorists on Interstate 380 in Cedar Rapids will receive warnings for the next two weeks as speed cameras begin operating. The camera system began issuing warnings Saturday and will continue in that mode for two weeks. After that, police say speeeding drivers will begin receiving citations in the mail. Drivers recorded exceeding the speed limit by up to 5 mph will be fined $25. Fines will climb to $500 for people traveling more than 30 mph over the limit.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) A carbon dioxide leak has prompted the evacuation of a Des Moines movie theater. The Carmike Southridge theater was emptied out Friday afternoon after a valve burst in a soda mixing room, causing a small cloud of carbon dioxide. Des Moines Fire Department Inspector Ted Johnson says no one was in danger but the theater staff did the right thing by ordering people to leave. The theater resumed normal operations later Friday.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Police cited a Des Moines man who admitted he slashed cars tires outside a city bar because he believed one of the watering hole’s customers gave him a dirty look. The 38-year-old was cited Thursday for fourth-degree criminal mischief for the incident that took place May 18. Police say the man was walking into Ron’s Dawg House Sports Bar when a patron shot him an angry glance. Authorities say that prompted the man to use a razor to slash a single tire on each of four cars parked outside. Police Detective Dave Smith says the man wasn’t sure which car belonged the customer who glared so “he made everybody pay.” The incident was captured on a security camera.
WINTERSET, Iowa (AP) The town of Winterset has honored its favorite son by dedicating a life-size statue of John Wayne. Long after Wayne’s passing, he remains the face of Winterset. The town’s celebration marking the centennial of the legend’s birth in 2007 has blossomed into an annual two-day event. At Friday’s kick-off, organizers unveiled an estimated 800-pound bronze statue of the Oscar-winning star that was sculpted in 1981. Wayne’s daughter, Aissa Wayne, flew in from Los Angeles to attend the dedication. Organizers planned to screen John Wayne movies during the weekend event, including “The Alamo,” in which Aissa Wayne appeared.
