(STORM LAKE)–A Memorial Day boat outing on Storm Lake has turned to tragedy.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, in a written statement, reports a 10-year-old boy, David P. McFarlin, was killed today.
According to the Sheriff of Buena Vista County, Gary Launderville, McFarlin was in a boat going across the lake shortly before 10 this morning when the vessel apparently struck a dredge pipe in the water. That caused that 175-horpsepower outboard motor to flip backwards into the boat and on top of the boy.
One other boy in the boat suffered some minor cuts as a result of the incident.
The boy’s name was released at 7:30 tonight (Monday). There were a total of six people in the boat. That includes the boat operator, the two injured boys and three other passengers.
