(LeMars) — You may not think that child poverty is a concern for Iowa, but in a recent seven-year study conducted by Iowa State University, child poverty is shown to be on the rise.
Brenda Welch, Youth Program Specialist for I-S-U extension says Plymouth County is fortunate as it ranks as the fourth lowest child poverty rate in Iowa. But Welch says that doesn’t mean there isn’t child poverty here.

Welch says a surprising fact about the study shows people with a high school diploma are not as likely to fall into poverty.

Welch says another interesting fact about the study showed that those children who were involved with 4-H or another similar program, they achieved higher grades, and were more likely to avoid poverty.
