The Remsen St. Mary’s volleyball team started off War Eagle Conference play with a four-set victory over Akron-Westfield at home on their newly redesigned court.
Right away, both teams were locked in a dogfight with the sixth-ranked Hawks taking set one, and Akron-Westfield storming back to take set two. Remsen St. Mary’s head coach Stacy Bunkers says the Westerners’ reaction time got to them early.
Both teams struggled throughout the night due to the heat inside the gym and it being both teams’ first match to a best of five. Akron-Westfield head coach Robyn Van Eldik says both teams really persevered through a tough match.
Once Claire Schroeder started succeeding offensively, the Hawks were following suit. Schroeder recorded nearly 20 kills in the win, and Coach Bunkers says that is due to her being able to play many positions.
Schroeder’s role has had to increase due to missing Whitney Jensen for the first couple of weeks of the season. Coach Bunkers says everyone has done their job well while waiting for Jensen to be healthy.
Akron-Westfield starts the year 0-1 in War Eagle Conference play and 1-2 overall. Coach Van Eldik says improvements need to be made in cleaner passes.
Coach Bunkers says passing needs to be worked on with her team as well, so that her setters do not have to move as much like they did against the Westerners.
Remsen St. Mary’s improves to 1-0 in the conference and 2-1 overall. Akron-Westfield heads to Hull on Thursday for a tournament at Boyden-Hull. Remsen St. Mary’s is at West Sioux next week on Tuesday to continue War Eagle Conference play.
