No. 10 Akron-Westfield softball falls in tight matchup with third-ranked West Lyon

The No. 10 Akron-Westfield softball team lost a hard-fought ranked matchup to third-ranked West Lyon in Akron by a score of 10-8.

The Westerners found themselves behind right away early after giving up a solo home run in the top of the first inning. They responded well with a big four-run bottom of the first to take the lead back. Akron-Westfield head coach Rachel Harris says her team was ready to go right away.

Unfortunately, that lead was short lived as West Lyon would put up five runs in the second to take a 6-4 lead. The Westerners kept their fight and scored a run in the second and third innings to tie the game. Coach Harris says the continuous drive to score was great to see.

In the end, West Lyon prevailed after scoring three runs in the fourth, and Akron-Westfield letting some opportunities slip by the wayside. Akron-Westfield left a total of nine runners on base and left the bases loaded to end an inning twice. Coach Harris says those opportunities need to be taken advantage of in games like this.

The Westerners drop to 17-3 overall with the loss. Of those three losses, two have come to West Lyon. Akron-Westfield has two more games left to play before postseason play begins next week. Coach Harris says games like this can prepare her team well for the great teams they will see on the path to Fort Dodge.

Akron-Westfield concludes the season with a game at home against George-Little Rock tonight and a game at Gehlen Catholic tomorrow.
