The MMCRU volleyball team picked up a massive five-set win at Gehlen Catholic on Tuesday night in War Eagle Conference action.
The win was the first over Gehlen Catholic for MMCRU as one consolidated program of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn and Remsen-Union. MMCRU head coach Heather Youde says being able to achieve that was something she congratulated her team about afterwards.
The Royals got it done with a steady attack from all angles and from all players. Five different players recorded at least eight kills to guide MMCRU to the one. Coach Youde says a night like this gives her setter Tia Tentinger some freedom in running the offense.
Gehlen Catholic was able to keep it a tight match thanks to some opportune attacks from Grace Kellen who hit over .400 with 19 kills to her line. Head coach Jessie Bohnenkamp says she has made some great strides as of late.
Ultimately, that success would not always be there as MMCRU knew they needed to take some things away. Coach Youde says some mid-match adjustments paid off for her team in order to win the match.
A five-set match does not mean all is lost for the team that loses. In fact, Gehlen Catholic showed a lot of resilience in battling back in a couple of sets to win them and keep them in the contest. Coach Bohnenkamp says that is something that can take them far.
Gehlen drops to 6-14 overall and 3-4 in the War Eagle Conference with the loss. Things will not get easier for the Jays who compete against some new competition at the Le Mars Invite this week. Coach Bohnenkamp says new competition is a good test for the girls with postseason play looming.
MMCRU upped their record to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference. Their season continues with just four matches left all coming in conference play. Coach Youde says two matches next week will be challenging including the first on Tuesday against Remsen St. Mary’s.
MMCRU takes on Remsen St. Mary’s in Marcus on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Gehlen competes in the Le Mars Invite beginning at 4:30 PM today.
