Beat the Blues Challenge moves into week seven
Week seven of the Le Mars Public Library’s Beat the Blues Challenge is taking place this week, with a focus on creativity and participation in the arts.
The challenge encourages participants to interact with the wide variety of artistic opportunities Le Mars has to offer. These include the classes and exhibits featured at the Le Mars Arts Center and the return of the Le Mars Community Theatre to the Postal Playhouse this year. The library has a nice collection of books to help you increase your creativity, as well as a new book, “Art Cure: The science of how the arts saves lives” by Daisy Fancour.
Participants can stop in the library anytime this week for a craft kit, and to receive a punch on their challenge card. Those who collect 4 punches on their card by March 6th will receive a free night at the movies on March 16th at the Royal 3 Theater.
For those getting a late start on the Beat the Blues Challenge, you can still work towards the free movie by participating in the Beat the Blues Scavenger hunt. To participate in the hunt, stop by the library and pick up a challenge card and find the Beat the Blues sign at participating businesses in Le Mars before March 6th.
Full list of participating businesses:
– Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor
– Branded 360
– Habitué

50th annual Iowa Beef Expo held at state fairgrounds
The 50th annual Iowa Beef Expo at the Iowa State Fairgrounds was held over the weekend and Cody Griffin of Moville was there with his red angus cattle. Griffin’s dad, Garth, bought the family’s first red angus heifer at the 1978 Iowa Beef Expo.
Colton Griffin, his son, showed two red angus heifers at the show on Saturday.
Back in 2021, after Colton’s eight-year-old classmate Hope Widman of Alton died, Colton led the effort to have his entire second grade class show Hope’s calf at the Woodbury County Fair. Colton’s dad says a lot of life lessons come from the barn.
Over 300 head of cattle were registered for sale at the Iowa Beef Expo this past weekend. Colton Griffin’s two heifers were among over a thousand entries from junior showmen. The red angus cattle the Griffins raise are covered in a reddish brown coat of hair.
