Gehlen Catholic boys basketball falls short of district title to Boyden-Hull

The Gehlen Catholic boys basketball team ended their season in the district title game Tuesday night with a 55-41 loss at Boyden-Hull.

Gehlen fell behind early in the game midway through the second quarter when turnovers were breeding turnovers and Boyden-Hull was building a lead. Head coach Eric Kellen says his guys did not play up to their potential during that stretch of the game.

In the second half, Gehlen tried to turn things around by working the ball into the painted area. That produced some great scoring chances for Mason Small and Carson Arens who each finished with 10+ points. Coach Kellen says that helped them hang around with Boyden-Hull.

Even with a double-digit lead for Boyden-Hull in the second half, Gehlen Catholic showed they were not going to back down from the game. Coach Kellen says that is something his guys have shown all season.

Gehlen ends the season with a record of 16-8 and will graduate a group of six seniors from this year’s team. Coach Kellen says the leadership from the senior class will be very hard to replace.

Dane Lehmann led the Jays in scoring with 12 points for the night. Boyden-Hull advances to play Coon Rapids-Bayard in the substate final on Saturday at 6:00 PM in Sioux City at East High School.
