United Way Kicks Off Their Annual Campaign

The Le Mars United Way kicked off their annual campaign yesterday (Thursday) with their Golf Outing at Willow Creek Golf Course. Le Mars Board Chair Peggy Sitzmann says 30 teams registered for the event, one of the largest turnouts in recent years.
Sitzmann told KLEM that funds stay local to support the programs and initiatives that help people right here in Le Mars and Plymouth County.
Peggy encouraged businesses and individuals to donate to United Way.
Terrie Binneboese- Director of Le Mars United Way- complimented Le Mars on their ongoing support of the program.

Cancer in Plymouth County
The Iowa Cancer Registry presented a zoom meeting Wednesday outlining the Cancer in Iowa: the 99 Counties Project findings for Plymouth County.
According to the report, each year in Plymouth County 180 new cancers are diagnosed- ranking Plymouth County 25th overall when compared to other counties in Iowa. An average of 49 cancer deaths are reported each year in Plymouth County- ranking the county 89th out of 99 counties for mortality. Iowa has the number two highest rate of new cancers in the United States.
The top cancers diagnosed in Plymouth County include prostate, female breast cancer, melanoma, lung, and colorectal cancer. Prostate cancer ranks fifth in the state compared to other counties in Iowa and melanoma ranks twelfth.

FEMA provides relief to City of Cherokee
FEMA has approved $17.5 million dollars for damage caused by severe storms in Iowa that hit 11 counties in 2020, 2024 and 2025.
The City of Cherokee receives over $298,000 to fund the repair or replacement of road surfaces, base and embankments as a result of severe storms and flooding.
Sioux County secondary roads was granted $572,625 to fund the repair or replacement of bridge-related components as a result of severe storms with straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding.
