Fire-Rescue Chief Schwarz talks lithium-ion batteries
On Monday, September 21, just before 3 p.m., the Le Mars Fire-Rescue Department responded to a garbage truck on fire at Central Avenue N.W. and 4th St N.W. in Le Mars. The origin of the fire was determined to be an improperly discarded lithium-ion battery.
Le Mars Fire-Rescue Chief Steve Schwarz gave his thoughts on how he believes the fire started.
Chief Schwarz described lithium-ion batteries as “a series of AA batteries hooked together.”
Chief Schwarz gave some safety tips for handling the batteries.
The consequences of improper disposal of these batteries can be severe.
To dispose of Lithium-ion Batteries, take them out to the Plymouth County Landfill and do not throw them in garbage cans.
