SafePlace to take over Monona, Plymouth, Woodbury counties starting October 1st

Starting on Thursday, October 1st, SafePlace, a private nonprofit agency dedicated to helping survivors of domestic violence, will be taking over sexual assault responses in Monona, Plymouth, and Woodbury counties. The Iowa Attorney General’s office recently provided SafePlace funding over CAASA, who previously held sexual assault response jurisdiction in Monona, Plymouth, and Woodbury counties.

Gina Sypersma, the Fundraising and Community Engagement Specialist at SafePlace Siouxland, spoke about the transition.

Sypersma emphasized that although SafePlace has been a more domestic violence focused group in recent years, the goal is to make the shift to a sexual assault focus, “as smooth and survivor-centered as possible.”

Building relationships with the survivors seeking help is an important part of the advocacy process.

The community has the power to help survivors as well.

Free radon testing kits available

Free radon testing kits will be available for Plymouth County residents today and tomorrow, September 29th and 30th. The state of Iowa was awarded $209 million to assist with healthcare initiatives across the state, with the radon testing kits being one of the initiatives.

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that can build up in homes. Long-term exposure to high levels of radon can increase the risk of lung cancer. If you test your home and have high radon levels, a second test is recommended to confirm results. If the results are still high, you may have the opportunity to receive help with radon mitigation funding.

Handout events will take place in Le Mars, Akron, Kingsley, and Remsen at the following locations over the next two days.
