Mescher’s Clothing hosts award presentation for Small Business of the Week

Yesterday, Mescher’s Clothing on Central Avenue in Le Mars hosted an award presentation for the Small Business of the Week award presented by U.S. Senator Joni Ernst.

Back in February, Senator Ernst recognized the Mescher family’s retail clothing businesses in Plymouth County as her Small Business of the Week. Ernst recognizes the work done by local small businesses in Iowa as part of her duties as the Chair of the Senate Small Business Committee. The Mescher family also received a certificate and will have their recognition entered directly into the official Congressional Record of the United States Senate.

Ernst stated, “It’s clear the Meschers and their businesses are woven into the fabric of the Plymouth County community. From providing the perfect place to shop ‘til you drop at Sugar-N-Spice and expanding through Lily Zita to suiting folks up for success at Mescher’s Clothing and steadfastly supporting events in downtown Le Mars, there is no shortage of material that makes the Meschers qualified to receive my Small Business of the Week award.”

The successful group of clothing shops started in 2013 when Jill Mescher founded Sugar-N-Spice in downtown Le Mars. As her children grew up, so did the business ventures. The teen boutique Lily Zita opened in 2021, and Mescher’s Clothing opened in 2024. Jill spoke on the evolution of the stores.

The award presentation had a large turnout, which “means the world” to the Meschers.

The Meschers take pride in giving back to the community by supporting Le Mars events.

Governor Reynolds signs proclamation suspending penalties for on-road dyed diesel use

On Tuesday, Governor Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation, in line with an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, to temporarily suspend state penalties for vehicles using dyed diesel to transport certain agricultural products on public roads. The proclamation is effective immediately and continues through February 2nd.

The proclamation temporarily suspends regulatory provisions of the Iowa Code that restrict the use of dyed diesel for highway transportation in motor vehicles hauling soybeans, corn, hay, straw, silage, stover, fertilizer (dry, liquid, and gas) manure (dry and liquid), and distillers’ grains. Regulatory provisions from the sale and use of such fuel for the same use are also temporarily suspended. The proclamation applies to loads transported on any public road within Iowa.
