The MMCRU football team won a crucial Class A District 1 contest on Friday, October 2 defeating Gehlen Catholic in Marcus by the score of 27-14.
The Royals had not scored in the first half of a game in over two weeks, and they came out on a mission to reverse that. MMCRU got up 20-0 at one point in the first half and took a 20-7 lead into the break. Head coach Colin Youde says he loved the energy his team came out with.
MMCRU was electric in the running game. The Royals ran for 199 yards as a team with three guys all over 55 yards rushing. Coach Youde highlighted Ayden Miller and Luke Kintigh as featured backs in a potent rushing attack.
The Royal offense did sputter a bit in the second half as they tried to run the clock out and wind the game down. Coach Youde says Gehlen Catholic also made some adjustments that challenged his offensive unit.
The Royals had to weather a lot of adversity throughout the game. Gehlen recovered an onside kick, benefitted from a bad snap on a punt, and returned an interception for a touchdown throughout the course of the game. Coach Youde says he was happy with the way his guys responded all night.
The Royals improve to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in the district continuing a four-game winning streak. They will take that into a matchup at West Sioux who is ranked second in Class A. Coach Youde says, regardless of the outcome, this will be a good test for his team.
Kickoff between the Royals and Falcons is at 7:00 PM in Hawarden at Eneboe Field.
