The No. 8 Gehlen Catholic volleyball team opened postseason play on Wednesday night with a sweep of Newell-Fonda in a Class 1A Regional Quarterfinal.
While the Jays came out on top in straight sets, they struggled to get solid footing in the first set. Gehlen did not lead the set until very late when the score was in their favor at 20-19. Gehlen Catholic head coach Jessie Bohnenkamp says her players needed to be reminded of what they needed to do to be successful.
The Jays were able to cruise to a win from their taking the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-14. Gehlen’s offense proved to be very multiple, and they ended with three players in double-figures in the kill category. Coach Bohnenkamp says her offense’s multiple options make them tough to stop.
Addi Castle proved once again that she can do just about any job on the court. She finished with 11 kills, 21 assists, and 2 blocks in the win. Coach Bohnenkamp says Castle has played very well especially after tweaking her offensive approach a bit.
Gehlen Catholic improves to 20-7 on the season marking their first 20-win season since 2022. They advance to Monday’s regional semifinal against Remsen St. Mary’s in Le Mars. Matches between these two have been competitive, and this round proves to be that once again. Coach Bohnenkamp says her team needs to focus on what they do best to come out on top.
Gehlen Catholic and Remsen St. Mary’s will serve it up at 7:00 PM on Monday night in Le Mars. KLEM Radio will bring live coverage of the match beginning at 6:45 PM.
