The No. 7 Hinton volleyball team grinded out a tough 3-1 victory over West Lyon in a Class 2A regional semifinal on Monday night.
When you get to this point in the year, everyone is good. The Wildcats proved that all night with a tough battle that gave the Blackhawks everything they could want. Hinton co-head coach Kate Ortegren says she was happy with how things got started in set one.
Hinton won the first set 25-18, but they had to fight out closer scores in the next couple of sets. The Blackhawks won the second 25-22 and lost the third 25-23. Things were close due to Hinton playing from behind for a good chunk of those sets. Coach Ortegren says the girls showed great resiliency to fight back.
Offensively, things got started for Hinton with Addy Pigott. Pigott had five kills in the first set and finished with 16 for the match with a .333 efficiency. As the match went along, Karlyn Kovarna got more opportunities and finished things off with 20 kills. Coach Ortegren says having multiple weapons gives opposing front rows fits.
Hinton ultimately won the match having to come from three points down to win set four by a score of 27-25. The Blackhawks advance to the region final on Wednesday night where they will match up with No. 11 Boyden-Hull. Both teams are very familiar with playing at the state tournament with Hinton looking for its third-straight trip to state, and Boyden-Hull looking for its fourth trip in five years. Coach Ortegren says the Comets are scrappy, and it will take some long rallies to beat them.
Hinton’s matchup with Boyden-Hull will be played at MOC-Floyd Valley high school on Wednesday, October 30 at 7:00 PM. You will be able to listen to the match on KLEM with coverage beginning at 6:45.
