Remsen To Celebrate Octoberfest

(Remsen) — This Saturday the people of Remsen will once again be celebrating their Luxemborg and Bavarian-German heritage for the 43rd time. Its all part of the Remsen Octoberfest. Karen Harnack with the Remsen Chamber of Commerce says the day will begin with a craft show featured at the MMCRU Middle School gymnasium beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Harnack says at the St. Mary’s gymnasium during the early afternoon will be the judging of the Little Prince and Princess contest, as well as the tapping of the Golden Keg.

Beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the St. Mary’s high school cafeteria will be the Octoberfest banquet featuring the traditional German and American foods.

Of course during the annual Octoberfest celebration are the sounds of the Alpine, and this year the Remsen celebration will feature two polka bands.

The Remsen Chamber official says the proceeds collected from the Remsen Octoberfest goes back into the community.

 

Accident Happens On Highway 75 Between Hinton And Merrill

(Hinton) — Two people were transported to the hospital following a two-vehicle accident that happened on the northbound lanes of U-S Highway 75 between Hinton
and Merrill. The accident happened shortly after 12:50 p.m. According to Plymouth County Sheriff’s deputies, they believe the injuries were non life- threatening. One of the vehicles involved was a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck
that sustained extensive damage to its front end. The Hinton Fire and Rescue Department, Hinton Ambulance, Merrill Fire and Rescue Department, Merrill Ambulance, Hinton Police, and the Le Mars Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. Officials were able to keep the northbound traffic moving on Highway 75,
although one lane was blocked for approximately a half and hour due to the accident. The accident is being investigated by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office.

 

Authorities Release Name Of Fire Victim

(Le Mars) — Authorities have released additional information and the identity of the victim regarding the fire that occurred on Saturday, October 15th at 620 Greenwood Avenue Southeast in Le Mars. The building was a duplex apartment building which on arrival firefighters encountered a heavy smoke showing from
the rear apartment and a male subject who had received burn injuries standing in the yard. The male subject is 21 year old Nicholas Huser of Le Mars. Huser was initially taken to the Floyd Valley Healthcare then airlifted to an Omaha hospital where he remains being treated for his injuries. The cause of the fire
is still being investigated. Gasoline was found ignited in the kitchen area of the home. The cause of this fire is being listed as undetermined at this time awaiting further evidence to be tested. The fire caused approximately $5,000 in damage. The front apartment residents were able to escape the building and were allowed back into their apartment after the fire. The Huser apartment is not able to be occupied at this time. Additional information will be provided when it becomes available.

 

Antique Auto Auction To Happen Today

(Le Mars) — More than 150 vintage automobiles and other such vehicles will be placed on auction today. The vehicles, which range in model years from the 1940’s to the 1970’s, are a collection obtained by Kellen Excavating of Le Mars
when it bought the estate of Brett Conley. Derek Kellen explains Conley was once a mechanic, and started the antique car collection.

Kellen says none of the vehicles to be sold are in working condition. However, he says he has received numerous phone calls inquiring about the collection, from various collectors from across the nation.

According to Kellen, the antique auto collection has several unique vehicles, some of which are very rare, including a special Volks Wagon pickup.

In addition to the Volks Wagon pickup, Kellen says there are other rare vehicles as part of the collection.

Kellen admits for many of the vehicles to be sold, the restoration process will be challenging for collectors, saying the work will be extensive.

The auction will be held at 32547 C-38. From the NIPCO corner, go east 1 1/2 miles.  The auction will begin at 11:00 a.m. and Kellen says it will consists of both a live auction as well as an on-line bidding auction.

 

Deputy Carried Gun While Drunk

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) – The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office says one of its deputies accused of having a weapon with him while drunkenly assaulting someone has resigned in lieu of being fired.
The former deputy, 34-year-old Erick McFerran on Friday, is charged with carrying weapons, assault causing bodily injury and harassment.
Court records say Waterloo police were called to a gas station on Oct. 14 after someone reported an assault. The records say McFerran had assaulted one person. Waterloo police say McFerran didn’t display the handgun during the
incident.
On Thursday, the sheriff’s office said McFerran opted to pursue resignation rather than face being fired following an internal department investigation.

 

Des Moines Hospital Trying To Figure How Many Patients Were Affected By The Watered Down Prescriptions

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A Des Moines hospital says a pharmacy tech removed a potent painkiller from hundreds of vials and replaced it with saline solution.
UnityPoint Health – Des Moines spokeswoman Amy Varcoe says Methodist Medical Center contacted 731 patients because they may not have received full doses of fentanyl. Varcoe says about 250 vials were affected, but that she doesn’t know how many patients received vials containing saline.
