Cattle Producers Enjoying Good Market Prices

(Le Mars) — Cattle producers have seen some increases in their price for fed cattle lately, and an analyst says it is due to consumer demand. Dr. Nevil Speer with Agri-Clear spoke yesterday at the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association Regional meeting held in Le Mars. He says producers need to take advantage of
the better prices.

He says there were a lot of cattle placed into feedlots during the spring months, which in a few months may place pressure on the market prices. Speer says cattle producers will need to stay ahead of the curve and do some aggressive
marketing.

Speer says producers have done a good job of keeping current with their marketing, and not allowing their cattle to get heavier, waiting on a better prices. But, he warned again of how consumer demand may change.

The cattle market analyst comments on the consumer demand that has helped boost cattle prices.

Speer says it is not just domestic beef demand that has helped the cattle producer, but foreign demand for U-S beef has been on the increase during the last few months.

D-Q Waits To Introduce The Bing Candy Bar Blizzard

(Sioux City) — A candy bar made in northwest Iowa could be making its way into Dairy Queen shops across the country. A new Bing Candy Bar Blizzard was supposed to be introduced locally Wednesday as a fundraiser for the Siouxland Chapter of
the Alzheimer’s Association. But, D-Q spokesperson Ashley Schoenrock said the company suspended the launch because Dairy Queen has received a large number of inquiries from its restaurants hundreds of miles from Sioux City.

The Bing Candy Bar is made by the Palmer Candy Company, which got its start in Sioux City in the late 1800s. Jeanne Steinkamp, with the Siouxland Alzheimer’s Association, said she was disappointed with the change of plans – but Dairy Queen did present Steinkamp with a $5,000 check for it’s annual “longest day” fundraiser.

BPI Lawsuit Trial Against ABC News Continues In Elk Point

(Elk Point) — Videotaped deposition testimony continued in Elk Point, South Dakota Thursday in the ongoing $1.9 billion dollar defamation lawsuit filed by Beef Products Incorporated against ABC Broadcasting.

For the second consecutive day, jurors heard taped testimony from Kevin Butler, the Vice President of Ground Beef Sales for American Foods Group.

That company sold ground beef containing BPI’s lean finely textured beef to several major grocery chains.

Butler testified to BPI’s attorney that major food chains like Kroger’s and Wal-Mart started dropping the product after ABC News ran their reports referring to LFTB as “pink slime”.

He says that led to several million dollars in losses for American Foods Group in the following months and years:

<<AUDIO \\KOOLPROGRAM\APNEWS\PUBLIC\AUDIO\LFTB.mp3>>

OC……..20 plus million dollars. :17

Butler testified that he was surprised by the tone of ABC’s news reports on LFTB:

<<AUDIO \\KOOLPROGRAM\APNEWS\PUBLIC\AUDIO\LFTB22.mp3>>

OC……..should be as such. ;25

Butler went on to say he believes the grocery stores would still be carrying LFTB if it wasn’t for the negative media coverage of the product.

The trial is in its third week in Union County District Court.
