Le Mars Community School Board Establishes Legislative Priorities

(Le Mars) — Last evening during the Le Mars Community Board of Education meeting, school board directors reviewed the legislative agenda for the upcoming legislative session. The school board identified four areas of interest to address as their legislative priorities. The school board supports continued
progress in the development of rigorous content standards and benchmarks that reflect the real-world knowledge and skills students need to graduate from high school prepared for college or to enter the workforce, including the following actions: a) provide and fund technical assistance to help school districts fully
implement the Iowa Core Content Standards which define what students should know and be able to do in math, science, English language arts, social studies, and 21st Century skills in areas such as financial and technological literacy. b).
Adopt high-quality summative and formative assessments, aligned to the skills the students should know and be able to do to succeed globally and locally. c).
Support research-based professional development that provides educators with training, support, and time to work together so that they can successfully teach a rigorous curriculum to all students. Ensure that curriculum decisions about how to teach remain in the hands of local schools and teachers. d). Include and fund all the components of successful standards systems: assessments aligned to high expectations, improved and aligned instruction and quality professional
development.

The school board also identified the idea to sufficiently give financial support to the Area Education Agencies to provide essential services in a cost-effective manner to school districts including: special education, technology, professional development, curriculum assessment, and student assessment data analysis. The Le Mars Community School Board would like to see state lawmakers work on a proper tax base, and asking lawmakers any additional tax credit must undergo an independent cost-benefit analysis.

Western Iowa Dairy Alliance To Hold Open House Wednesday

(Le Mars) — June is Dairy Month, and the Western Iowa Dairy Alliance is again scheduled to hold an open house inviting the public to witness the activities, including the milking of cows, on a dairy farm. This year, the open house will occur near Primghar, Iowa at the Summitt Dairy Farm located at 5564 390th Street, or three miles west of Primghar on county road B-40, and 12 miles east of Highway 60 on county road B-40. Jenna Riediger serves as the executive director with the Western Iowa Dairy Alliance and says the open house is scheduled for this coming Wednesday evening between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

In past open houses, upwards of a thousand people have visited the selected dairy farm. Riediger explains why the region’s dairy producers and dairy processors choose to hold an open house.

The Western Iowa Dairy Alliance has a goal to expand on what is known as the I-29 Dairy Corridor, and Riediger explains the importance behind the goal.
