Solar Eclipse To Happen Today

(Le Mars) — Today is the day of the much anticipated solar eclipse, and according to Joel Sander, an assistant professor of physics for the University of South Dakota, we should not expect drastic changes to occur.

A variety of unusual circumstances may occur on Monday’s Total Eclipse.

If it was a sunny day, Le Mars would notice approximately 90 percent coverage of the eclipse.  Sander says eye protection is necessary when observing the total eclipse.

Sander believes the pin whole telescope is one of the safest and most effective ways to view the eclipse.

KLEM news checked with three different vision care offices in Le Mars, and none of them were carrying the solar protective eye wear glasses that allow you to view the solar eclipse.  Hy-Vee and Wal-mart no longer have the eye wear
available.

Ragweed Pollen On the Increase

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – An eastern Nebraska doctor says ragweed pollen is showing up in significant numbers in Omaha and western Iowa. Dr. Linda Ford, an allergist in Bellevue, tells the Omaha World-Herald that a pollen-collection station for Omaha and Council Bluffs, Iowa, has shown a lot of ragweed pollen of late. Ford says the amount of the ragweed pollen jumped significantly last week. Ford says ragweed pollen peaks around Labor Day. In addition to medication, Ford says, allergy sufferers should use a saline nasal rinse after spending time outside. Allergy sufferers who have been mowing should wash their hair and change their clothes afterward. She said they also should keep their windows and doors closed, even on
cool nights. —

Ames To Start Up New Water Treatment Facility

AMES, Iowa (AP) – A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held this week for the newly completed Ames, Iowa, water-treatment plant. The ceremony and open house will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday. Mayor Ann Campbell, current and former City Council members, state agency representatives and other elected officials will participate in the ribbon cutting. Following the
ceremony, tours of the facility will be provided, exhibits and displays will showcase the water treatment process, and an art exhibit will be on display. The new $70 million plant, which can treat 15 million gallons of wastewater per day, replaces a more than 90-year-old facility. The location of the new plant, on property formerly owned by the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
allows for the reuse of existing infrastructure and provides space for future expansion.

Man Who Hit Church With A Car Is Sentenced To Prison

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) – A man who hit a church with a car while trying to elude police in north-central Iowa’s Mason City has been sentenced to roughly a year and a half in jail.
KIMT-TV reports 31-year-old Daniel Solano of Mason City also was fined $630 and ordered to pay restitution to the church.
Solano pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree theft and fourth-degree criminal mischief. A judge sentenced him to 270-day terms on each count, with those terms to be served one after the other.
Solano was arrested May 21 after he tried to drive away from police responding to a report of a stolen vehicle. Officers say Solano drove across Prince of Peace Lutheran Church’s yard and hit the corner of the building, reportedly causing more than $1,000 in damage.
