Propane Explosion between Remsen and Kingsley Injures Two People (Updated)

(Kingsley) — Authorities have released the names of the two victims from last Friday’s propane gas explosion that completely destroyed one hog barn and burned three other buildings. Plymouth County Sheriff’s office have identified the victims as 47-year old Pedro Trelo Gallegos of Jefferson, South Dakota, and 46- year old Pedro Martinez Alvarado of Remsen. The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office says that approximately 1200 head of feeder pigs weighing between 30 and 50 pounds had died as a result of the surrounding hog barns that caught on fire
following the explosion.

(Kingsley) — A propane explosion happened this morning on a farm in the southeast area of Plymouth County. The Plymouth County Communications Office received a 911 call about a propane explosion that had occurred at about 7:15 a.m. The Remsen,
Kingsley, and Pierson Fire Departments, along with the Remsen and Kingsley Ambulance responded to that propane explosion. The propane explosion happened
at the 27552 Polk Avenue between Remsen and Kingsley. Two people have been severely injured as a result of that explosion. One was airlifted by Mercy Air Care helicopter and taken to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, the other was
transported to Mercy via the Remsen Ambulance. One hog barn, a nursery hog barn has been completely destroyed as a result of the propane explosion. Hanna Monsent lives at the residence and heard the explosion.

Kingsley Fire Chief Paul Huth says it was like a bomb that had gone off. Huth says work crews were cleaning the barn on Thursday, which may have been a factor
for the explosion.

Huth says one hog barn was completely destroyed by the blast of the explosion, but flames had spread to other surrounding hog facilities.

The Kingsley Fire Chief says the pig nursrey building with the explosion did not have any pigs inside, however he says there were a few pigs left in the other close by buildings.

Huth says the pigs that died were around forty pounds of weight, but officials don’t yet have a count as to the number of pigs that perished from the explosion and resulting fire. The Kingsley Fire Department were the first to arrive at the explosion site and Huth describes what he saw at the scene.

As mentioned two people were injured during the explosion blast. The names of the victims have not been released as of yet. Huth says both victims were in critical condition.

Fire fighters were on the scene for four hours. Smoke could be seen from several miles away while coming to the scene.
