Seven Year Old Becomes “Junior Deputy for the Day”

Seven year old, Boston Kniep of Le Mars signs his name to the certificate acknowledging his participation as the Plymouth County Sheriff’s “Junior Deputy for the Day.”  Sheriff Mike Van Otterloo looks on.

(Le Mars) — Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office has added a new deputy to their staff…at least for a day. Seven year old Boston Kneip, the son of Troy and Noelle Kniep of Le Mars was given the opportunity to be the “Junior Deputy” for today. Boston was able to become the “Junior Deputy of the Day” through a silent auction fund raising activity from the Floyd Valley Healthcare. The Le Mars Police Department had a similar program last year with their “Officer of the Day.” Chief Deputy Jeff TeBrink says he visited
with Le Mars Police Chief Kevin Vande Vegte to gain some ideas and insight, and then created their own program.  TeBrink, helped coordinate the program and explains what was involved.

Troy Kneip, Boston’s father, says his son has always showed some interest in law enforcement, and has indicated he wants to be a police officer or sheriff’s deputy when he grows up.

As “Junior Deputy of the Day, Boston Kniep, was given a tour of the Plymouth County Law Enforcement Center, including inside the Communications Center.  Communications Director Kurt Hatting and Chief Deputy Jeff Te Brink look on.

Noelle Kniep says the Junior Deputy award was a birthday gift for the seven year old.

Seven year old, Boston Kniep, was able to participate in a “Ride-along” with Deputy Matt Struve as part of his opportunities as the “Junior Deputy of the Day.”

Noelle expressed her gratitude for making her son’s birthday gift one that he will long remember.

The “Junior Deputy of the Day” also assisted with a traffic stop, with Deputy Matt Struve.

Boston Kneip’s grandparents were also at the Plymouth County Law Enforcement Center watching Boston become the “Junior Deputy of the Day.”
