(LE MARS)—A ground covering of green leaves is causing the phone to ring at the I-S-U Extension Plymouth County office today.
I-S-U Extension staff members Joel De Jong and Janelle Johnson have already handled about 30 calls.
They’ve researched information about green ash tree leaf drops from I-S-U horticulturist Rich Jauron. A common fungal disease of trees, anthracnose can occur in ash, sycamore, maple, oak, walnut and other deciduous trees.
Here’s additional information from the Plymouth County Extension Service/ISU horticulturalist Richard Jauron:
Why are my green ash trees dropping leaves?
The leaf drop is probably due to anthracnose. Anthracnose is a common fungal disease of trees in Iowa. Anthracnose may occur on ash, sycamore, maple, oak, walnut and other deciduous trees. Cool, rainy weather in spring favors anthracnose development. Symptoms of anthracnose vary with the tree species. On ash, brown or black blotches typically appear on the leaflets. Affected leaflets often become distorted (they tend to curl toward the blighted areas) and fall from the trees.
Fortunately, anthracnose does not cause serious harm to healthy, well-established trees. The affected trees will continue to leaf out. Leaves that develop later in spring are usually not affected as weather conditions are less favorable for anthracnose development. There is no need to apply a fungicide to affected trees.
The Iowa Cooperative Extension Service’s programs and policies are consistent with pertinent federal and state laws and regulations on nondiscrimination regarding race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age and handicap.
(DES MOINES)–Iowa’s state treasurer is announcing a top ten list of unclaimed properties in Plymouth County.
State treasurer Mike Fitzgerald says he’s releasing the list of the top 10 unclaimed properties in Plymouth County as part of the upcoming spring publication of the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt.
Unclaimed property refers to money and other assets held by financial institutions or companies that have lost contact with the property’s owner for a specific period of time. State law requires this to be reported annually and that the unclaimed property be delivered to the State Treasurer’s office where it is held until the owner or heir of the property is found.
Commons forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies , utility security deposits and safe deposit box contents.

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) A study published in a medical journal ranks the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota as one of the top schools in the country for producing rural physicians.
It ranked fourth nationally with 31 percent of its graduates practicing in rural areas. West Virginia ranked first with 41 percent.
The study tracked medical school graduates from 1988 to 1997 who were rural physicians in 2005. The results were published recently in Academic Medicine, the journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) Mason City police say a man was shot and wounded in a hail of gunfire.
Police say the man was hospitalized Saturday night after being shot several times at a residence.
Witnesses reported hearing about a dozen shots shortly after 11:30 p.m. The gunfire could be heard from several blocks away.
Lt. Logan Wernet said Sunday that the man’s name was not released because the information is part of an ongoing investigation. There was no immediate word on his condition.
No arrests have been made.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Des Moines police say two people were injured when their car slammed into a house when the driver lost control.
Police say the car was speeding and hit the corner of the house and a car parked in the driveway about 2 a.m. on Monday.
Two women inside the car were injured and taken to a hospital. Their names were not immediately released.
Authorities say three people inside the house were not injured, but the crash cracked the home’s foundation.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) Cedar Rapids fire officials say a fire at an apartment complex was intentionally set.
The fire at Gateway Gardens was reported early Sunday when one of the residents called 911 after hearing smoke alarms going off in a second-floor hallway of the two-story building.
The building has eight apartments, and three were occupied. Seven people, including three children, escaped unharmed.
Fire department spokesman Greg Buelow says investigators determined the fire, which started in a hallway, was intentional.
He says no arrests have been made, but the investigation is ongoing.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) Cedar Rapids authorities say a child playing with a lighter caused a house fire.
The fire was reported Sunday evening. By the time firefighters arrived, flames and smoke were coming out of a window on the second level.
Authorities say a man and four children escaped without injury.
Fire Department spokesman Greg Buelow says investigators determined the fire was caused by a child playing with a lighter. He says there were smoke alarms, but the batteries were missing.
The fire, which started in a second-level bedroom, caused significant damage.
BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) Members of Burlington’s only Jewish congregation are dealing with a case of vandalism.
Someone defaced their temple’s sign with red paint over the weekend. The graffiti was discovered Sunday by Temple Israel member Ruth Stein.
She says she has no idea who is responsible or why they did it.
Temple Israel has about 20 members.
The vandalism took place sometime between Friday night, the last time Stein was at the building, and Sunday morning.
Burlington Police say they were unaware of the vandalism but would investigate.
Stein says she and her husband, Irvin, plan to paint over the graffiti on Monday.
